📬 Canada Post Strike Looms as Workers Set Friday Walkout

More than 55,000 Canada Post employees are preparing to strike as early as midnight Friday, following official notice from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. This would mark the second major work stoppage in six months, potentially disrupting mail and parcel delivery for millions across the country, including in Oakville.

Canada Post has confirmed it will stop accepting new mail during the strike, though social assistance cheques and live animals already in the system will still be delivered. The union is still negotiating collective agreements for thousands of mail carriers, while management warns of worsening financial strain, citing an $845-million loss in 2023.

The strike notice comes just days after a federal report proposed sweeping reforms, including ending daily door-to-door delivery for homes. The union rejected the findings, saying community input was ignored. As tensions rise, businesses and residents are bracing for another round of delivery delays.

🏗️ $3M Boost for Kerr Street Seniors Housing Project

Halton Region is receiving over $3 million from the Ontario Government to help complete a new seniors housing development at 265 Kerr Street in Oakville. Funded through the province’s Last Mile Funding program, the four-storey building will include 52 units, with 22 reserved for homeless seniors with chronic health and mobility needs. It will also feature a ground-floor Community Wellness Hub offering services like wellness workshops, tablet lending, and care coordination.

This will be Halton’s first Passive House Certified multi-residential building, setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in the region. Construction is on track for completion by spring 2025, supporting the region’s growing need for affordable housing for seniors and helping reduce pressure on emergency shelters and healthcare services.

Brianne Jenner of the Ottawa Charge | PWHL

Oakville’s Brianne Jenner has officially begun her run for the Walter Cup, leading the Ottawa Charge to a 2-1 victory in Game 1 of the PWHL Finals against the Minnesota Frost last night. The Charge advanced after a hard-fought 3-1 series win over Montreal, with Jenner playing a key role throughout the playoffs.

Jenner, who scored crucial goals in earlier rounds, continues to be a driving force for her team. “This is what you work towards every off-season,” she told media in Ottawa. “Every team’s goal at the beginning of the year is to get themselves in this position.” The Charge now push forward in their bid to become just the second team to ever win the Walter Cup. Game 2 is set for later this week.
