🏡 What Does Home Mean to You? Habitat for Humanity's Annual Writing Contest is Back!
Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 are invited to share their thoughts in Habitat for Humanity’s Meaning of Home writing contest, running until February 21. Each entry, whether a poem or essay, raises $10 to support Habitat HMD in building safe, affordable homes for families in need.
Last year, Burlington’s Kashvi K. won the grade 4 grand prize with her piece, A Home is Not a House, earning a $30,000 grant for Habitat HMD. Oakville’s Isla A. was a runner-up, contributing an additional $10,000 through her heartfelt entry, H.O.M.E.
This contest not only raises critical funds but also encourages students to reflect on the importance of housing and its impact on families and communities. Teachers and parents can access resources and submit entries online or by mail with the button below:

🚨 Oakville MP Anita Anand Will Not Seek Re-Election or Liberal Leadership
Oakville MP and Canadian Transport Minister Anita Anand announced over the weekend that she will not seek re-election nor enter the race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. Her decision comes shortly after Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Liberal leader.
First elected in 2019, Anand became the first woman of Indian descent to represent Oakville in Parliament. She was re-elected in 2021 and played a key role in navigating Canada through the challenges of the pandemic, earning a strong reputation in the House of Commons.
In her statement, Anand expressed deep gratitude for the support of Oakville residents:
"Oakville rallied behind me not once but twice since 2019, an honour I will hold in my heart forever."
Anand will step away from politics to return to her passions for teaching, research, and public policy analysis. This marks a significant chapter in Oakville’s political landscape as the community looks ahead to its next representative.

🏒 Brianne Jenner: From Oakville Roots to Pro Hockey Stardom

PWHL
Oakville’s own Brianne Jenner has become a standout figure in professional women’s hockey and an integral member of Team Canada. Learning to skate on her father’s backyard rink, Jenner’s hockey journey began in her hometown before taking her to Cornell University and eventually to the international stage.
Jenner has represented Canada in three Olympics, including the legendary 2014 Sochi Games, where her pivotal goal sparked one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic hockey history. Her career is filled with gold and silver medals, championship titles, and leadership roles, including captaining the Calgary Inferno to two Clarkson Cup victories in the now-defunct CWHL.
Currently, Jenner serves as the first-ever captain of the Ottawa Charge in the newly formed PWHL, helping elevate the league and inspire a new generation of players. Ottawa is currently third in the PWHL with 21 games remaining, and Jenner will be a huge part of their push towards the playoffs.
