Three Grade 10 students from Thomas A. Blakelock High School have been named regional finalists in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow competition for their shark-repelling fishnet. Emmy Nah, Amrutha Kosuri, and Veera Kalsi, part of the school’s I-STEM program, designed the net using electromagnets and blue LEDs to deter sharks from fishing gear, aiming to protect endangered marine life and preserve ocean ecosystems.
The Oakville trio has already earned $2,500 in Samsung products and hopes to further develop their prototype with future funding. With guidance from teacher Ainslie-Maria D'Alesio, the students have balanced innovation with schoolwork while also championing women in STEM. “While we were solving the issue of life underwater, we were also helping solve gender equality,” said Kalsi. Their achievement marks a proud moment for Oakville and a promising step toward sustainable marine practices.
