🏀 Only Basketball, Ball Hockey Allowed

Oakville council will vote July 7 on new rules that would permit only basketball and ball hockey on local residential streets, excluding bus routes. These sports could be played during daylight hours but would be banned from 8pm-9am between May and October, and from 5pm-9am between November and April. Equipment must be removed when not in use, and enforcement will focus on education unless safety complaints arise.

The proposal follows a town survey showing strong support for basketball and ball hockey, while sports like soccer and badminton fell short. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll previously argued limiting kids’ play is unfair given today’s tiny backyards. Do you think these rules strike the right balance for Oakville families?

🚨 Speed Cameras Nab 17,000 Drivers

Oakville’s new speed cameras caught more than 17,000 drivers in just 99 days, with most tickets issued to those speeding up to 15 km/h over the limit. Nearly 500 drivers were clocked at more than 25 km/h over, and 57 cases of stunt driving were recorded, including a driver hitting 132 km/h on Reynolds Street. The cameras, launched Jan. 22 near schools and parks, have already reduced average speeds by up to 16 km/h in some areas.

Town staff say the program is encouraging safer driving, though around 25 per cent of tickets remain unpaid, which could lead to license plate denials. A full report is expected in September. Have you noticed drivers slowing down around your neighbourhood since the cameras went live?

🌱 $5K Grants for Local Ideas

Ontario’s Community Changemakers program is offering $5,000 grants and a year of training to 30 residents with ideas to improve public spaces and civic life. Open to anyone 19+ living in Ontario, the program supports grassroots projects like storytelling workshops, art spaces, and community transit pilots. Applications close Aug. 25 at 5pm, with selected Changemakers joining an in-person studio in Toronto this fall plus monthly coaching sessions.

Organizers hope to see strong interest from small towns, rural areas, and equity-deserving communities. If you have a great idea, this could be your chance to bring it to life.

📚 Two White Oaks Students Win Harvard Prize

Source: Oakville News

White Oaks Secondary is celebrating a rare double win as classmates Hasini Medabalime and Anjola Solademi were both named 2025 Harvard Book Prize recipients. This marks the first time the Harvard Club of Toronto has awarded two students from the same school, recognizing their exceptional academics, leadership, and community contributions. The pair were honoured at a June 17 ceremony attended by Harvard Club officials, school staff, and proud family members.

Oakville now boasts Harvard Book Prize winners two years running, highlighting the town’s strong schools and commitment to nurturing future leaders. Congratulations to our winners!
