🌧️ Flood Risk Alert: Snowmelt Could Lead to Basement Flooding

With temperatures rising above freezing this week, Halton Region is warning residents about an increased risk of home flooding due to rapid snowmelt. This winter’s heavy snowfall, combined with fluctuating temperatures, poses a threat to homes—especially those with basements. The region cautions that frozen ground may not absorb melting snow, leading to potential flooding from overflowing rivers and backed-up storm drains.

To minimize the risk, Halton Region advises residents to:

  • Move snow away from foundations to reduce water seepage.

  • Clear downspouts and eavestroughs for proper water flow.

  • Test sump pumps and ensure discharge pipes are clear.

  • Inspect foundations for cracks or water damage.

  • Keep storm drains clear of snow and debris.

  • Store valuables off the basement floor to protect them from water damage.

The region is also offering financial support through the Enhanced Basement Flooding Prevention Subsidy Program, which includes subsidies for downspout disconnection, sump pump installation, and backwater valve installation.

Residents are encouraged to keep fire hydrants and sidewalks clear of snow to ensure community safety. For more details, visit Halton Region’s website or call 311.

❤️ Community Generosity Shines: $335,000+ Raised at 'Sleepless For Our Community'

United Way Halton & Hamilton's Sleepless For Our Community event surpassed expectations, raising over $335,000 to support vital programs addressing poverty in Halton and Hamilton. The event, held on February 21, 2025, exceeded its initial fundraising goal of $300,000, bringing together locals who spent the night in their vehicles to raise awareness and funds for those facing poverty-related challenges.

The proceeds will directly benefit programs providing housing support, food security, mental health resources, and job training. Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton, emphasized the importance of the event, saying, "The demand for support in our community is at an all-time high, with countless individuals and families struggling to meet their basic needs." He also noted, "This event is a reminder that poverty is not an abstract issue. It impacts real people, our neighbours, and our community."

Thanks to generous community support and donation matching through the Local Love Community Match, the event not only raised essential funds but also heightened awareness of poverty's impact on local families. United Way extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants and donors for their impactful contributions.

🏒 Oakville's Michael Misa Breaks Saginaw Spirit Points Record

Natalie Shaver/OHL

Oakville's own Michael Misa has made history by breaking the Saginaw Spirit's single-season point scoring record. The 18-year-old hockey sensation achieved this milestone with a two-assist performance against the Guelph Storm, bringing his total to 112 points this season—surpassing the previous record of 111 set by Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti.

Misa’s impressive point total isn’t just a franchise record; it also places him at the top of the OHL scoring leaderboard with a 13-point lead over the second-place player. With the NHL Draft approaching in June, Misa is expected to contend for the first overall pick, joining the ranks of legendary players like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Sidney Crosby.

A standout talent from the beginning, Misa was one of only seven players in OHL history to receive exceptional status, allowing him to enter the league at just 15 years old. Three years later, he’s not only meeting but exceeding expectations, solidifying his place as one of the top players in his age group.
