🌌 Look Up, Oakville! Two Meteor Showers Light Up the Sky This Week

If you needed an excuse to stay up late, here it is. Two meteor showers will be lighting up the skies over southern Ontario this week. First up are the Lyrids, peaking from this evening into early Tuesday morning. You could spot 10 to 15 meteors an hour if you find a dark enough sky, so try to catch them before the moon rises at 8:35 p.m.

Then, the Eta Aquariids pick up the cosmic baton. These speedy meteors, known for their glowing trails, are active now and will peak just before dawn on Monday, May 5. With a little luck and clear skies, you might see up to 20 meteors an hour.

For the best experience, grab a cozy blanket, a hot drink, and a reclining chair. A red flashlight is also handy so your eyes can stay adjusted to the dark. Don’t miss it!

🏆 Oakville Youth Awards Celebrate Outstanding Young Changemakers

The spotlight is on Oakville’s incredible youth as more than 100 nominees have been selected for the 2025 Oakville Youth Awards. Hosted by the Town and the Oakville Youth Action Committee, the awards recognize young leaders making a real impact in areas like arts, sports, STEM, community involvement, and more.

The celebration takes place Wednesday, May 7 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, featuring live music, inspiring stories, and a whole lot of community pride. Every nominee will receive a certificate, while winners will be honoured on stage.

This event is part of National Youth Week, running May 1–7, with free activities and events for local youth. It's the perfect chance to cheer on the next generation of trailblazers and join in the fun.
