🏛️ Halton Police to Launch Facial Recognition System

Halton police are investing $1.1 million to implement an AI-driven facial recognition system, which will be part of a shared database with York and Peel police. The system, developed by Idemia Identity and Security Canada LLC, aims to assist in identifying suspects by comparing facial geometry against a database of lawfully obtained mug shots and tattoo images.
Police officials emphasize that public images, such as social media photos, will not be used. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill reassured that all potential matches would undergo further review by forensic analysts before being accepted or rejected. Chief Stephen Tanner compared the technology to fingerprint analysis and noted that this tool could significantly enhance investigations.
While the exact launch date remains unclear, community engagement sessions will be held to address public concerns. Halton police also hope to see other Ontario police services join the initiative in the future.
