🌴 Oakville Getting Tropical?

Oakville’s climate zone has officially warmed up, meaning local gardeners can now try growing plants once thought too exotic for the area. With fewer deep freezes, species like palms, banana plants, and even pineapple lilies are surviving in the ground longer. Samuel Michaud, part of a group called “Zone Pushers,” has turned his Galt backyard into a mini jungle using creative ways to protect plants in winter.

Experts say Oakville’s new zone rating, now 7a, means the coldest winter temperatures aren’t as harsh as they used to be. That gives gardeners more freedom but also reflects shifting weather patterns linked to climate change. Some see it as a fun challenge, others as a warning sign. Either way, it’s getting a little more tropical in our own backyards.

🐶 Doggie Dip Fun

The Oakville & Milton Humane Society’s Doggie Dip is back, inviting local pups to cool off with a swim and enjoy some outdoor fun. Alongside pool time, the Barkin’ Market will offer treats, toys, and pet gear for dogs and their humans to explore together.

The fun starts in Milton on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Rotary Park, then heads to Lions Pool in Oakville on Sunday, Sept. 14 with tickets being $25 per dog. Don’t forget that your pup deserves to have fun too!

🤝 Big Brothers Big Sisters Needs Mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters Halton says demand for youth mentorship is growing faster than they can handle, with 44 local kids already on a waitlist and 27 Halton schools asking for access to their programs. The group pairs caring adult volunteers with at-risk youth, offering consistent support that helps improve education, mental health, and long-term outcomes.

To keep up, the organization is calling for more volunteers, stable funding, and staff to support both mentors and youth. With hundreds of schools and families waiting, they say every helping hand counts.

🏅 Special Olympics Stars Set for Appleby

Oakville’s 2025 Marathon of Sport returns to Appleby College on Saturday, Sept. 27, running 9am-3pm in support of Special Olympics Canada. The day-long event pairs local athletes with community teams to compete in friendly games like soccer, basketball, benchball, and even giant pong, all while raising funds for inclusive sports programs.

Organizers are aiming to beat last year’s $42,000 total, and the public is invited to take part by forming or joining a team. It’s a full day of high-energy fun, open to all skill levels, and a great way to support local Special Olympics athletes through sport and connection.
