🎨 New Mural Celebrates Kerr Street Spirit

A vibrant mural now greets visitors at Trafalgar Park Community Centre, capturing the essence of Oakville’s Kerr Street neighbourhood through local voices. Created by artist Kseniya Tsoy with youth and seniors, the piece blends personal stories, heritage, and scenery like Lake Ontario and the old Kerr Street seniors centre to reflect community pride and shared identity.

Unveiled on May 5 during National Youth Week and the Oakville Seniors Centre’s 50th anniversary, the mural is now up for a 2025 Creative City Impact Award. Funded through Halton’s Community Safety plan, the project was a true cross-generational effort that brought people together through art.

🛠️ New Art Installation Honours Black History

Construction has begun at Burnet Park on a permanent art installation commemorating Oakville’s Black history and the legacy of Samuel Adams. Designed by the Studio of Contemporary Architecture and built by Avion Construction Group, the piece will honour Adams, a freed slave and respected blacksmith who settled in Oakville in the 1850s.

Set for completion by late September, the installation includes stone from the original Adams family home at 104 Burnet Street and iron benches nodding to Samuel’s trade. It marks a meaningful tribute just steps from Kerr and Lakeshore, deepening the community’s connection to its past.

Oakville’s Naoko Matsubara has debuted her first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario, showcasing six decades of masterful woodcut prints. The exhibit, which opened July 17, features 20 works and a short documentary filmed in her Oakville studio. Matsubara, whose vibrant pieces also appear at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital and the YMCA, has been a prominent figure in international art circles since the 1960s.

Curated to reflect her evolving style, the show includes early monochromatic pieces and later colourful prints like Tagasode, created with 17 woodblocks. Themes such as hands, trees, and human connection run through her work. A resident since the 1970s, Matsubara says Oakville’s peaceful setting remains key to her creative life.
